Obituary: Charles Schwenke

A celebration of life service for Charles Henry Schwenke, 82, of LeClaire, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at First Presbyterian Church, LeClaire. Graveside burial will be in Glendale Cemetery, LeClaire. A reception will follow at the LeClaire Civic Center. Visitation will be Friday, June 15, from 4-7 p.m. at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf.

Mr. Schwenke died Sunday, May 27, 2018, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

Charles Schwenke was born Oct. 6, 1935, in rural Ollie, Iowa, the son of Ray and Evelyn Schwenke. He graduated from Sigourney (Iowa) High School, and graduated from The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy in 1964 with a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy.

He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Fort Lee, Va.

He married Jacqueline Brenner Smith in 1975. She preceded him in death.

He owned and operated Schwenke Pharmacy in LeClaire from 1969 until his retirement in 2009.

He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of LeClaire, where he served as an Elder and on multiple committees. He was a former member of the LeClaire City Council, the LeClaire Lions Club, and the Snow Masonic Lodge #44.

His hobbies were spending time with his family, fishing along the Mississippi River, and watching documentaries about the Civil War.

Survivors include his children, Stephen and John, both of LeClaire, Angelika, Wheeler, Ore., and Anthony, Moline; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his siblings, Gerri Greiner, Coralville, Gloria Millikin, Oskaloosa, Gayle Nassar, Cairo, Egypt, and Thomas Schwenke, Golden, Colo.; and a brother-in-law, John Rios, Coralville.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Gregory; a sister, Gladys Rios; and two brothers, Ray Jr. and Herman.
