Obituary: Carl August

Private family visitation and services for Carl W. “Bill” August, 81, of Stanwood, formerly of New Liberty, will be held at the Chapel of Love, New Liberty. Inurnment will be at a later date in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Effingham, Kan. The Bentley Funeral Home, Durant, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mr. August died Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at Crestridge Care Center, Maquoketa.

Carl August was born Oct. 13, 1937, in Lincoln, Neb., the son of Lloyd and Genevieve (Stone) August. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School, Effingham.

He served in the Kansas National Guard for four years.

He married Catherine “Gelene” Eckert on Nov. 12, 1955, in Effingham.

He started his career as a pattern maker at LFM in Atchison, Kan. He moved to Davenport in 1965, where he worked for various union pattern shops in the Quad Cities. He and his family moved to a farm near New Liberty in 1970, and he founded Liberty Pattern Company in New Liberty in 1981. In 2002, he founded LibertyUS in New Liberty, and Litian in Ningbo, China.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tipton.

His hobbies were collecting railroad memorabilia, antique tools and cars, traveling, talking politics, and spending time with family.

Survivors include his wife; his children, Leo (Joan) August, Davenport, Mike (Kay) August and Linda August, all of New Liberty, Rhonda (James) Kuehl, Stockton, Gary (Robyn) August, Walcott, and Craig (Shirly) August, Ningbo; 23 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; a half-sister, Judy Cranfill, Athens, Texas; and a half-brother, David August, Atchison.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Eugene and James August; and a great-grandson, Nolan August.
