German immigrant Claus Hell tilled the Midwest prairies

In the early days of Scott County, the land was covered miles upon miles of grass, with some trees. Used to the vast forests of the east, some pioneers found this unsettling. Most of the trees in this new place grew along the streams and rivers, with fewer in the open areas.
