In one teaspoon of healthy Iowa topsoil there are more organisms than people on the earth. As farmers and ranchers, your goal is to manage your soil to promote crop health and hold that soil in place to make sure each teaspoon of soil and the organisms in it count towards the bottom line. Based on nitrogen and phosphorus values from ISU in 2016, 1 ton of Iowa topsoil is worth $1.38 in N and P. The value of N and P doesn’t include the importance of soil organisms in healthy soil bringing nutrients to the plant particularly during times of stress!
