Our staff came back together Monday after a crazy week that saw our editor and ad manager on vacation, plus assistant editor Mark Ridolfi in Portland, Ore., receiving a prestigious award ... and oh, yes, did I say it was also a week of our Eldridge Summer Festival, ball tournaments and a lot more (as you can see in this week's paper)? more

Here is assistant editor Mark Ridolfi's explanation which he was asked to write about his column, "How do you petition a grievance without access to records?," which won the 2018 Golden Quill Award presented by the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors. 1978: Iowa Machine Shed opened

July 20, 1978: Plans were announced for the opening on July 25 of the Iowa Machine Shed, a new restaurant “dedicated to the Iowa farmer,” located on highway 130 just south of Interstate 80. Happy Joe Whitty and Dan Whalen were the developers behind the project. more

Such timing as this! Fifty years ago the young Robert D. Ray, in his first campaign for governor of Iowa, promoted his candidacy on the steps of the James Mohr family farmhouse west of Eldridge. That is the image on page 1 of The NSP's "Pages from the Past" on page 3B of this week's paper. more
