Elizabeth Jane (Janie) Randall of Eldridge, Iowa, a teacher, community volunteer, and homemaker, died on Monday, March 18, 2013, at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, following an extended illness.
A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Faith Lutheran Church in Eldridge. Visitation was from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church (www.faithlutheraneldridge.com), the Relay for Life (www.southvalleyrelay.org) or the Eldridge Branch of the Scott County Library (www.scottcountylibrary.org). Chambers Funeral Home of Eldridge assisted the family with arrangements.
Elizabeth was born April 27, 1947, in Washington, D.C., a twin daughter of Elizabeth Jane (Betty) Spillman and Vincent Carlyle Cooley.
Elizabeth graduated from Gouverneur (New York) High School in 1965. She earned her BA in elementary education from SUNY Potsdam in 1974 graduating cum laude. She earned her MBA from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater in 1994 also in elementary education. She was inducted in the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society in Whitewater in 1993.
Elizabeth married Stephen Randall on Aug. 27, 1966, at the First Methodist Church in Gouverneur.
Elizabeth was inducted into Who’s Who in Education in 1994, citied for her accomplishments in education and community service.
Elizabeth had a passion for reading and the library. She was a staff member of the Scott County Library. She served as a lifetime member of the Friends of the Eldridge Library and past president of the organization. In addition, Elizabeth has been a member of the International Reading Association for over 30 years.
She is survived by her husband, Stephen Randall of Eldridge; children, Mark Randall of Phoenix, Ariz., Todd Randall of San Diego, Calif., and Kimberly (Michael) Sutcliffe of Vancouver, Wash.; her twin sister, Julie (Alfred) Klein of Las Vegas, Nev.; brother, Steve (Suzanne) Cooley of Shady Side, Md.; sister, Mary Grant of Hackettstown, N.J., sister, Theresa Cooley-Zgela of Silver Springs, Md., brother, Michael Cooley and his fiancée, Carol of Warrenton, Va., sister, Missy (Steve) Custead of Frederick, Md., sister, Anne (Jon) Nagelvoort of Olney, Md.; sister-in-law, Margie Cooley of Alexandria, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Christopher Cooley, in 2009, and by her parents.
Elizabeth was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church of Eldridge, and enjoyed performing in the Christmas Cantata.
Elizabeth loved to travel, work in her flower garden, enjoyed the campouts with the “Thimblecorks,” and quilting with the “Thimblettes.” She had a particular fondness for her cats.
A celebration of life will be held in 3 months in Gouverneur for people that could not make the trip to Iowa.
