Edward Joseph Hughes Jr., of DeWitt, died Friday, March 8, 2013, at his home, following a battle with cancer. Per his request no services were held. The Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, was in charge of arrangements.
Edward Hughes was born July 9, 1940, in Davenport, the son of Edward Sr. and Mildred (Malik) Hughes. He attended Bettendorf High School and St. Ambrose College. He married Sandra Jean Flathers in 1959.
Mr. Hughes served in the National Guard for six years.
He worked at Alcoa in Bettendorf for 31 years as a production control administrator, retiring in 1990. After retiring he became an Iowa State Licensed Private Investigator, a certified Master Gardener, and Alcoa Club president.
Mr. Hughes was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt.
His hobbies were woodworking, crossword puzzles, cryptoquotes, grilling, cribbage, fishing, his grandchildren, and his pets.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mary Beth (Todd) Nutting, Boise, Idaho; sons, David (Theresa), Elgin, Ill., Steven (Shelly), Brookfield, Wis., and Michael (Anne), LeClaire; grandchildren, Genevieve, Reba, Ryan, Trevor, Nathan, Johanna, Jack, Elizabeth, and Melissa; brothers, Jerry (Judy) of Arizona, and Roger (Marilyn) of Illinois; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Hughes, Davenport.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Randy and Preston.
