Memorial services for Shirley L. Kalahar, 84, of Moline, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2 at Silvis United Methodist Church, Silvis, Ill. The Burkhart-Eighner Funeral Home, Sandwich, Ill., was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Kalahar died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at Northshore Specialty Hospital, Covington, La., with her daughters and son-in-law by her side.
Shirley Olson was born Oct. 21, 1928, in Fort Dodge, the daughter of Leonard and Lucille (Stark) Olson. She married Donald Kalahar on Feb. 15, 1947.
Mrs. Kalahar was a teacher for 36 ½ years in Iowa and the Moline school system. She volunteered for 13 years at Illini Hospital in Silvis.
After retiring she became a member of a TGIF teachers’ luncheon group. She was also a member of Silvis and Hampton United Methodist churches.
Her hobbies were traveling with her husband and daughters, music, and having coffee with friends.
Memorials may be made to the University of Iowa Foundation for the benefit of the Iowa Lions Eye Bank Donor Memorial Fund.
Survivors include daughters, Sheryl Kalahar Burley, New Boston, Ill., and Paddy Kalahar (Leo) Lossett, Madisonville, La.; a sister, Debi (Randy) Goslin, LeClaire; brothers, Dennis (Karen) Olson, Fountain Valley, Calif., and Stephen (Debbie) Olson, Spring Hope, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Doris Kuehnast, Humboldt; and a brother-in-law, Harold (Oney) Kalahar, Dayton, Iowa.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Donald and Rex Olson, and a brother-in-law, Marvin Kuehnast.
