Obituary: Raymond Poston

Ray Poston

Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Raymond A. Poston, 72, a resident of Walcott, were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial was in Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Princeton, Iowa. Visitation was Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, downtown Davenport. There was a short prayer service at 6:30.

Ray died at his home on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.

Raymond Allan Poston was born on Aug. 6, 1940, in Rock Island, Ill., a son of Lloyd and Adina (DeLong) Poston. He was united in marriage to Camilla “Clancy” O’Hara on Feb. 8, 1964, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Davenport.

Ray was a journeyman electrician for over 45 years, retiring in 2002. He was a member of IBEW, Local 145, where he served on the E-board and was an apprentice instructor for many years.

Ray was raised Presbyterian, but embraced Camilla’s faith, agreeing to raise their children Catholic. He proudly sent his children to Catholic schools and enjoyed the fellowship of the parishioners at Our Lady of Victory.

Ray took an active role in both his children and grandchildren’s lives. From the time his children were young, he coached Little League, and became a role model for many young people. He insisted on fair play and equal opportunity for all participants. After his retirement, Ray and Camilla traveled extensively. Ray would babysit for his 12 grandchildren (not all at once), run them all around town, and wouldn’t miss an event or activity they were participating in. He also was a great fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs.

Memorials may be made to Assumption High School, Our Lady of Victory, or will be directed to Melanoma research.

Ray is survived by his wife, Camilla, Walcott; children and their spouses: Pam (Scott) Conklin, Walcott, Raymond (Leslie) Poston, Dixon, Iowa, Teri (David) DeVine, Walcott, and Tom (Chris) Poston, Davenport; grandchildren, Zach Poston, Bailey Poston, Adina DeVine, Allie Poston, Patrick DeVine, Nicholas Poston, Ava Poston, Seamus DeVine, Danny Poston, Scotty Conklin, Camilla Conklin, and Sam Poston; siblings, Catherine Ainesworth, Cedar Rapids, Bill Poston, and Susan (Dave) Snyder, all of Rock Island;  sisters-in-law, Colleen (Jimmie) Bryant, West Liberty, Mary (Roger) Simmons, Morris, Ill., and Rose O’Hara, Cocoa, Fla.; and his beloved chocolate lab, Sophie.

He was preceded in death by infant children, Danny and Theresa; his parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary (Bob) Guinn; sister-in-law, Donna Poston; and brothers-in-law, Richard and Kenneth O’Hara.  May they rest in peace.
