Obituary: Ralph Steines

A funeral liturgy for Ralph John Steines, 88, of Calamus, was held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 at Saints Philip and James Catholic Church, Grand Mound, with Rev. Father William Kneemiller presiding. Pallbearers were Terry, Ryan, and Tait Steines, Jim and Adam Gravert, and Walter Bartels. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Calamus. The Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Steines died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at Wheatland Manor.

Ralph Steines was born March 27, 1924, in Spragueville, Iowa, the son of William and Lorena (Schmidt) Steines.

Mr. Steines served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He farmed the family farm at rural Calamus for more than 60 years. He also drove school bus for Calamus Community Schools for 14 years. Mr. Steines was a member of the church, and Magnus M. Petersen American Legion Post 466 of Calamus for nearly 50 years. His hobbies were farming, animals, the outdoors, hunting and fishing.

Memorials may be made to the CALCO Hall Roof Fund.

Survivors include sisters, Doris Ihrig, Maquoketa, and Junice Nelson, Conyers, Ga.; brothers, Loren (Darlene), Alpha, Ill., and William “Butch,” Dixon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Thelma Elsner and Alice DeVoss, and brothers, Delbert, Eldred, LeRoy and Robert.
