Mary Rose passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City, following a decline in her health.

Mary Rose was born Aug. 23, 1931, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Claude Bernard and Marguerite (Schebler) Heidgerken. She was united in marriage to Herbert Edward Smith on Sept. 2, 1950, in Davenport. He preceded her in death in 1997. Mary Rose was a graduate of Davenport High School. She had been employed as a lunch lady at North Scott High School, retiring following over 20 years of service.

Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Ann’s Church and the Danish Sisterhood of America.  She was a dedicated and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  Always the “go to person” in the family she had her pulse on everything happening and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her and loved her.  She enjoyed spending time at the Friendly House and the camaraderie she gained with those she befriended there; she especially enjoyed the ceramics classes.

Memorials may be made to Friendly House or Danish Sisterhood of America.

She is survived by her 11 children and their spouses; Deborah (Ron) Wallace, Long Grove, Dana Smith, Rock Island, Doug (Carla) Smith, New Boston, Ill., Dan Smith, Dakota City, Neb., Deanna (Bob) Holst, Bettendorf, Darren Smith, DeWitt, David (Mary Martha) Smith, McCausland, Dickson Smith, Eldridge, Donny Smith, DeWitt, Dean Smith, Davenport, Darcy (Peter) McCormick, Pewaukee, Wis.; 26 loving grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings Jerry, Ted, Marge and Claudine. May they rest in peace.
