Helen Agnes Poppe

Helen Agnes Poppe, 90, of Strawberry Point, died on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home. A visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23 (today) at the Leonard-Muller Funeral Home, Strawberry Point. A private family service will be held. Burial will be in the Cass Township Cemetery, Strawberry Point.

Helen Farrance was born Dec. 3, 1922, in Davenport, the daughter of Arthur and Lillian (Schmidt) Farrance. She was raised and educated in the Davenport area.

She was employed at the Rock Island Arsenal before her marriage to Loyd Poppe on Dec. 5, 1948, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport.
Together they farmed near Mount Joy and Princeton. In 1964 they moved to Strawberry Point. Mrs. Poppe was a farm wife.

She was a member of the Friendly Neighbors Card Club and the Northeast Iowa Antique Association. She did volunteer work with the Iowa Department of the Blind and received the Governor’s Volunteer Award.

Survivors include her husband; children, Susan (Roger) Ward, Epworth, James (Pamela) Poppe, Des Moines, Barbara Cole, Ely, Beverly (David) Pech, Lamont, Loyd Jr., Red Boiling Springs, Tenn., Kenneth (Debra) Poppe, Norwalk, and Patricia (John) Grimes, North Freedom, Wis.; 19 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Arthur Farrance, Rock Island.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Jean Beauchat and Mae Kuehl.
