Emme L. Merrick, 88, of Maquoketa, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at the Crestridge Nursing Home in Maquoketa. A Natural Journey Farewell with cremation was held. Burial was at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa. The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa was in charge of arrangements.
Emme Shim was born March 20, 1924, in Four Paths, Jamaica, the daughter of Charles and Vashti (Berthol) Shim. She was a graduate of the Alpha Commercial College in Kingston, Jamaica. She married William Merrick on Oct. 11, 1952, at the Port of Spain, Trinidad, British West Indies.
Mrs. Merrick had worked as a clerk for the Jackson County Clerk of Courts, and then as a teller at Jackson State Bank in Maquoketa. She retired after many years of service as a clerk working for the Jackson County Soil Conservation Office.
She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Raphael #1156.
Mrs. Merrick’s hobbies were volunteering for numerous community organizations and being a U.S. citizenship instructor.
Survivors include her husband; children, Kerry Merrick, Plant City, Fla., Brad (Janet) Merrick, Eldridge, and Vicki (Dennis Mecum) Merrick-Mecum, Palm Bay, Fla.; three grandchildren; and brothers, Leslie (Glenna) Shim, Orlando, Fla., and Herman Shim, Kingston, Jamaica.
She was preceded in death by a son, Roger, and sisters, Casin Davis, Inez Lyn, and Rose Chin-Sue.
