A four-unit apartment complex on Spring Street in Eldridge caught fire at roughly 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Eldridge Assistant Fire Chief Mitch Cunningham told The North Scott Press that there were no injuries in the fire. While an investigation is still ongoing, Cunningham indicated that maintenance work in the building may have started the blaze. The fire started on the upper level of the two-story building and spread into the attic. For roughly 10 minutes, flames could be seen coming from the roof. Mutual aid was called, with the Long Grove Fire Department and other emergency responders assisting the Eldridge Fire Department. Cunningham stated that he did not believe the fire would result in a total loss. However, he said that the structure will be uninhabitable until further notice. At roughly 4:30 p.m., he indicated that the Red Cross was on its way to offer assistance to affected residents. Please check back later for story updates.
