Funeral services for Herbert F. Ries, 80, of Davenport, were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17 in the Runge Mortuary Chapel, Davenport, with Pastor Todd Hunter conducting the service. Burial was in the Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Ries died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at Genesis West Medical Center, Davenport, surrounded by his family.
Herb Ries was born Feb. 18, 1932, the son of Francis J. and Thelma A. Ries. He graduated from Davenport High in 1952. He married Lorna F. Arp, of Eldridge, on July 10, 1954.
Mr. Ries had served in the Naval Reserve.
He worked at Bessler Locomotive from 1952-1956, at Englehart Manufacturing, and at Caterpillar Tractor in Mt. Joy, retiring in 1988.
Mr. Ries was a member of the National Square Dance Campers Association and a lifelong member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church.
Herb was a “Jack of all trades” including mechanical repair, plumbing and carpentry.
His hobbies were boating, camping and square dancing.
Memorials may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church or American Cancer Society.
Survivors include his wife; children, Mark Ries, Eldridge, and David (Valerie) Ries, Long Grove; three grandchildren, Miranda Ries, Kirsten Thune, and Koryn Ries; a great-granddaughter; and a sister, Mary Ann Francois, Bettendorf;
He was preceded in death by his son, Kelly.
