The race for the Mississippi Athletic Conference crown will become a lot clearer after Friday night, and North Scott’s football team is hoping that when the dust clears they’ll still be in the hunt for a piece of the championship pie.
The Lancers will take their 2-2 record on the road to Pleasant Valley where they will face the undefeated Spartans, and just a few miles away unbeaten Muscatine will be taking on Bettendorf (3-1).
A victory by both the Lancers and Bulldogs would create a logjam at the top of the MAC heap, and coach Kevin Tippet’s boys would be just one game back.
The Spartans are currently the talk of the MAC — and ranked third in the state — after handing Bettendorf its worst loss in four decades (38-0) last Friday, and their 441.3 yards per game ranks second only to North Scott’s 441.8 average.
Forget the fact the Lancers have won six of the last seven meetings between the two teams — including last year’s 26-20 win in the season opener. Friday is all about momentum, and the Spartans have plenty of it after outscoring their first four opponents 186-20.
North Scott prevailed 26-20 a year ago on the Spartans’ artificial turf, and the Lancers will be hoping for a repeat performance.
