Scott County was well represented at the 2012 ISU 4-H Youth Horse Jamboree March 24-25 in Ames. Eleven young women from local 4-H clubs, their leaders and parents traveled to the campus of Iowa State University to compete in the categories of Hippology, Quiz Bowl, Presentations and Horseless Horse Projects.
In the junior division, Megan Guest, Kaitlyn Evans, Maria Korndorf, Abby Wyjack and Ali Krier, all from Pleasant Valley, made up the Scott County Junior Quiz Bowl Team. Maddie Weyeneth, Mackenzie Woods and Ali Krier competed in Horseless entries. The Junior Quiz Bowl team, coached by Tammy Guest and Lexie Korndorf, finished third out of 13 teams. Megan Guest and Kaitlyn Evans tied for fifth in Overall High Point Score.
Ali Krier received Grand Champion for her poster, considered for Champion in photography and poetry, won three blue ribbons in painting, crafts and scrapbooking, and a red ribbon in drawing. Maddie Weyeneth was Reserve Champion in junior photography, and Mackenzie Woods was Reserve Champion in junior painting.
In the senior division, the Senior Quiz Bowl Team, coached by Jennifer Weyeneth and Renee Wientjes, competed for the first time at the high school level. Team members were: Abbie Weyeneth (Davenport Central), Lexie Korndorf (Pleasant Valley), Megan Watts (North Scott), and Sydney Wientjes (Bettendorf). The team placed second overall and will proceed to the Quarter Horse Congress in Ohio in October. Lexie Korndorf was Grand Champion in Overall Senior Quiz Bowl Individual High Point Score.
Abbie Weyeneth and Megan Watts were named Grand Champions in team demonstration for their presentation on the Interscholastic Equestrian Association and will be going to Denver for the 4-H Western Nationals in January of 2013. Sydney Wientjes received Grand Champion ribbons in digital/video storytelling and senior drawing, and a blue ribbon in photography.
